Flatid planthopper
-2.56282, 140.504
Field Notes
Description:
This is an unidentified planthopper of the family Flatidae. The group is cosmopolitan in distribution. Adults of some species are brightly colored and easily identified but others require the use of ID keys and dissection. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatidae
Habitat:
Spotted on cassava (Manihot esculenta) in a large semi-urban yard & garden next to a disturbed patch of remnant lowland forest.
Notes:
I was tempted to proffer Taparella amata based on http://www1.dpi.nsw.gov.au/keys/fulgor/indo/species/tamata.htm but the shape looks wrong. However this word of "Caution" from the same website is applicable more generally in many instances while trying to ID species from digital images on Project Noah:
"Many of the [insects] depicted on these pages are outwardly similar and you should not use photographs as the sole means of identification. These pages form part of a scientific key which will assist a trained [entomologist] to identify the species accurately."
