Field Notes

Description:

This great egret in full breeding coloration and plumage landed first on an abandoned golf course and then on my backyard pool screening. The photos show its stunning green facial skin and beautiful breeding plumage as well as it preening and yawning.

Habitat:

Along an inland fresh water canal in western Boca Raton FL.

Notes:

I watched the egret for a while across the canal from my backyard and was surprised when it took off and landed right on the edge of my pool screening. It let me get within about 15 feet of it as it watched the activities of the ducks and birds in the yard and preened itself.
