Thank you Jakubko for the ID. I went for Hemileuca tricolor but I'll update it if necessary.
Thank you Jackubko for the ID and the link. Both IDs look good to me (the untrained eye). I'll wait for your confirmation.
I just found out about H. peninsularis, which now looks more probable in my eyes. Lets see which one gets more votes and then I'll delete the suggestion with the lesser of the votes.
Please verify! The only Hemileuca that appeared to look like this one was H. tricolor.
