Field Notes

Description:

A Horned Lark in snow first week of March 2013

Habitat:

I've been finding these larks alongside dirt or gravel roads that run between pasture land and farm fields throughout Otter Tail County in North-western Minnesota USA.

Notes:

Spotted my first Horned Lark of the year the first week of March. They were even more numerous prior to a storm that brought us freezing rain, followed by heavy snow and strong winds. I'm not sure if they went south to wait out the storm or if they were lost. They appear to be very hearty so I'm hoping they just flew south for a while.

bee.jacbs-Thank you so much! I spent weeks trying to get close to these skittish Larks. For me driving along dirt roads at a snail's pace worked out well. Many still flew away however there was always a curious one in the bunch that stuck around long enough to get a few shots in. :-)
More amazing shots. That second picture is really stunning. I love seeing these little guys as they pass though. I don't usually get that close even with my binoculars. Thanks for sharing Janelle.
One of my favorites, such cute little guys :) Beautiful pictures!
Beautiful series Janelle!
