Description:

Saw these scatter shells along the trail (up away from the water) where something had eaten these freshwater mussels. It's an invasive Asian clam shell, but the pearly white inner shell (without purple tinge) made me hope it was a native freshwater species.

Notes:

Spotted along the Iron Hill Trail of Red Top Mountain State Park

Hi QWMom...I've fixed it for you! It's kinda hard to sometimes put them apart as mollusks have an exoskeleton instead of an internal skeleton! ;-)

Sorry - I was thinking of this shell as bone-like remains when I tagged for the Osteology mission but it has been brought to my attention that it is inappropriate for invertebrates to be included; now I can't remove the mission. Hopefully a helpful Noah Ranger will assist?
