Field Notes

Description:

This little bird has made a nest in our pineapple guava tree and is sitting very intently in it. I hope this means babies soon!!!

The babies arrived roughly 12-14 days after this first post. In the first few days they are black with a pink under belly and very tightly closed eyes. They appear to be completely bald. Mama bird alternates from being at the nest warming them and off finding food for them. In the second picture above I caught mama at the nest right after she was finished feeding them. She appeared to be regurgitating and licking her beak. I will continue to update this post as I can.

Habitat:

Tiny little nest including some of our dog's fur (which should mean it is a warm nest too)

Of course you can add another spotting! The photos are from a different day anyways :)
Ashley ... I have more recent pictures to load but can't load more here.. do you know if I can open another spotting or is that not allowed?
Ashley got a shot of the babies looking for food. Also updated a second shot of the mama right after she finished feeding them.
Nevermind I see the baby photo now haha. They are adorable! Try and keep taking pictures as they grow :)
That's awesome! I hope you can get photos without disturbing them so we can all see!
Ashley... the babies are here! They are between 1 and 3 days old.
No problem! I hope you will be able to safely photograph the babies when they hatch and share them on here, I'd love to see them!
Thanks Ashley! You were right!!! I think Anna's hummingbird is the right one. Also just posted pictures of her eggs.
This is adorable, I have always wanted to find a hummingbird nest! However, I do not believe this is a Ruby-throated Hummingbird. They are an eastern species and though they do show up in California, they are very rare. Female hummingbirds are hard to tell apart, but I'm fairly positive this is not a Ruby-throated :)
