Water-measurer
Astraeus sp.
35.1981, -83.1746
Field Notes
Description:
Once mature, the outer membrane splits open and retracts to allow spores to escape the inner membrane. The outer membrane is hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs water from the environment. The "rays" close up when it's dry and reopen with moisture hence its common name.
Habitat:
Open, SW facing hill. Several were growing together in a mossy area.
Notes:
A. hygrometricus? pteridis? I'm not familiar enough with them to get specific.
