Field Notes

Notes:

The Pheasant Coucal is not actually a pheasant, but a type of cuckoo. It is ground-dwelling and, unlike other Australian cuckoos, it incubates and raises its own young instead of laying its eggs in the nest of another species. This one was right up in the treetops being harassed by numerous other birds including Noisy Friarbirds and Noisy Miners (you can see a friarbird in the sixth shot). I am not 100% certain of the ID - I thought at first because it was in the treetops and because of its behaviour that it was a Common or Eastern Koel (Eudynamys orientalis). However, the bird in my spotting looks much more like the Pheasant Coucal. I am happy for someone to set me straight if I am incorrect or confirm the ID for me!!
