Asian Palm Civet
Paradoxurus hermaphroditus
22.5726, 88.3639
Field Notes
Description:
Small furry mammal. Love the big Gollum-like eyes.
Habitat:
My neighbours roof has this triangular hollow that animals love. It used to be a Barn owl's home. Currently it is empty. As I was stepping out for my walk this morning I heard the cawing of tens of crows...their alarm call. I looked up, ran indoors and grabbed the camera ...got only a few shots as I had to be careful not to alert passers by...not all are animal lovers.
I know these animals are just about managing to hold on...saw a baby civet in my garden a few weeks back...
Notes:
These animals eat fruits and also flesh (small birds). They leave their droppings EVERYWHERE...even my window sill at office.
Wikipedia: In Bengal there is a variety of fragrant rice known as Govindabhog rice (the rice which is offered to Lord Govinda/Krishna). The civet cat smells like that Gobindobhog (and tiger urine smells like Basmati rice!) rice, so it is often called as "Gandho (smell/fragrance) Gokul (Lord Krishna's village).
