Field Notes

Description:

This is a Crane Fly with a long proboscis and is feeding on a flower. I've never seen a Cranefly with a proboscis before. It is a Tipuloidea of the Family Limoniidae. This one has an exceptionally long proboscis. It also has a small red mite attached to one of it's hind legs.

Habitat:

Riverside observation point for viewing the Dovali Bridge over the the Coatzacoalcos River.

Notes:

While many if not most Crane Flies do not feed as adults, the species of Limonia (subgenus Geranomyia) feed on nectar using their long probosces.
