Field Notes

Description:

Basically a large land turtle. Dark brown to gray-black in general color and their bottom shell is yellowish.

Habitat:

Long leaf pine habitat is one of the most suitable for them; but w/ that almost gone other well drained and sandy soil habitats are sought. This one was spotted in a pasture area on Brooker Creek Preserve during a bi-weekly bird survey. After the morning sun came out so did the tortoise to warm up.
