Field Notes

Description:

Both Thekla and Crested Larks live here and at first glance they appear identical, but they have slight differences in looks and habits. Crested Larks tend to prefer flatter ground and when disturbed will fly a short distance before going back to ground while Theklas prefer rockier, hilly ground and and tend to perch on top of bushes when disturbed before returning to the ground. One bid difference is the ancillaries (feathers under the armpits) which are orange reddish on Cresteds and sandy on Theklas as per pic 4 & 5.

Habitat:

Agricultural field at foot of limestone hillside.
