Field Notes

Description:

This female hairy woodpecker is 9" in size and she does not have a red mark on head. Black and white with white belly, black wings with rows of white spots. Her bill is long (nearly width of head) and black. She greatly looks like the downy woodpecker which is 6" in size and has a small bill. This is my first spotting of a hairy woodpecker.

Habitat:

This hairy woodpecker was spotted in the Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. She was very busy drumming on a tree.
