Field Notes

Description:

This nest was an old one, and about 4 feet off the ground, and only a few feet from the trail. The sides were very thin, but still holding together, and the leaves used in its construction clearly visible. Possibly a vireo nest.

Habitat:

Riparian woodland near Lewisville Lake.

Notes:

Vireo nests are a rough and slightly rounded hanging cup, usually suspended from forks of horizontal twigs. The nest may consist of plant matter, cobwebs, lichen, animal hair, and rarely feathers.
The female selects the nest site and may place nesting material in several locations before beginning to build at the final location. The nest is almost always located in the outer portions of a tree or shrub, supported by two lateral branches.

There are several types of vireo that could be in this area. I have to admit I don't know the distinctions between there nests.
