Field Notes

Description:

A large black wasp (about 24mm long) with uniformly black head, body and thorax. Wings were tinted black each with a single orangey-red patch. Antennae had about 10 segments. Fine setae covered legs.

Notes:

This wasp flew into the house on a very warm night. It did not settle for more than a few seconds making it difficult to take any photos. It disappeared behind furniture only to reappear the next day. I had to guide it out the next morning after I took this only shot.

My thanks to BugEric for directing me to the family of wasps- now for more research !

BugEric, thanks so much for looking at this (I was hoping you would!) and for your input. I can't find much information on Australian wasps in any of my resources. Now that I've got some direction, I'll research further. This was one handsome wasp !
