Description:

Family of the tooth fungus. Light colored and with dangling spines. Edible and being tested for medical uses.

Habitat:

Mostly found on logs or hardwoods. This was found growing in a damaged willow tree.

The Coralloides grows more on dead trees. This is a live tree. Also it is still young and growing. This and the other one I chose are the ones likely in the bay area.
Ah, I see you changed the name and it's more likely that it's H. Americanum.
Because it looks like H. Coralloides, not like H. Erinaceum: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hericium Here you can see a picture of both.
