Field Notes

Description:

The Asilidae are the robber fly family. They are powerfully built, bristly flies with short, sharp, stout sucking mouthparts. The name "robber flies" reflects their notoriously aggressive predatory habits; they feed mainly on other insects and they largely wait in ambush and catch their prey in flight.

Notes:

I noticed some strange-looking insects on a coconut palm right in my backyard. Taking a closer view to my greatest surprise, it was the robber fly. (Something I'd imagined to be non-existent in my region). A pack of them, small ones. They looked like hatchlings. A couple of days later, they were all gone to begin adult life elsewhere apparently.
