Field Notes

Description:

This cute little guy is the smallest of the tree squirrels in my part of the world. It has a reddish coat, with a white underbelly.

Habitat:

This cute little guy lives in an old growth deciduous forest. Normally these cute little guys had been living in pine forests and eating primarily seeds from pine cones. This guy however is dining on other food sources, and is a somewhat frequent visitor to one of my bird feeding stations.

Notes:

Photographed in my yard, this cute little guy in photo number one looks like he does not like the nut he was eating, because he is sticking out his tongue. In actuality this guy was actually choking, and was trying to cough it up. I had never seen this happen before with a squirrel, and was thrilled to be able to make this capture so I could share it with you.

Thanks Fyn Kynd, and thanks for the friends request on facebook. I post many more of my captures there then on here, as you will soon see. Some will be put up on Project Noah soon, however.
Awesome spotting, congratulations William!
Thanks Carol, you know me, always striving for tack sharp, detail oriented, photos of my sightings.
Thanks for the kind words and comments, randp1, NuwanChathuranga, AntónioGinjaGinja, kiannab1, and Ajwerko. SOTD is quite an honor, and I am touched to have been chosen once again.
Great capture Wilie, beautiful, congrats on the SOTD and thanks for sharing
SOTD, Wow!, Thank you Project Noah for this great honor. YukoChartraw, I sure did not see this coming, I was totally blindsided. I will have to put out an assortment of raw nuts for him tomorrow morning, I only hope that he and not the myriad of Eastern Grays that come to my feeders, do not eat them all before he gets a chance. I only have one of these cute guys, and a few dozen Eastern Grays. Joshua Asel, Thanks you so much, I strive for nothing less then tack sharp images. Anything less then that, and I am not happy with myself, or the capture I made. Thank you Reza
I knew that a SOTD was coming! Congratulations! Maybe this cute little guy deserves more nuts from you. ;-)
cute little guy, sharp images congrats
Congratulations on another wonderful spotting of the day Bill! A red squirrel chokes on a nut in our spotting of the day. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152696856510603&set=a.10152383557885603.943728.10150120463815603&type=1 https://twitter.com/projectnoah/status/318570656151240704
Nice to see a different species...and well photographed at that!
PetriceFischer, I am thrilled you were able to see your squirrel up close, and it was not afraid of you. I love to be able to see wildlife up close, and when they are acting as they normally would. It is always wonderful, when some birds, and animals allow you to get close to observe them.
Thanks so much for the comments, I am thrilled you enjoyed my captures on this spotting, Harsha Singh, SandraPereira, Jakubko, Andrea Lim, and Satyen. This cute little red squirrel, was just fine after his little choking incident.
I was walking in Compton 1 day a squirrel stop in front of me he looked at me as I looked at him you did not run he just ate whatever he was eating and stared at me as I stared at you I think Compton squirrel are not afraid of anything I left before he did
I love the expression! I hope he was okay after the choking episode!
Thank you so very much EnvUnlimited, Ajwerko, and Alice LongMartin
Excellent pictures and good story! I have just one in my yard also.
Great series!! Thanks for sharing.
You did extremely well to get a photo of the flying squirrel, I managed to see a pair of Giant Indian flying squirrels in Khana glide above my head which was a great privilege but the trees they were in were very dense and unfortunately I couldnt get a decent shot. Thanks for sharing this one though :)
Debbie, I am blessed to have an occasional fox squirrel 20 to 30 eastern gray squirrels and this lone red squirrel in my yard from time to time. I also am blessed with another squirrel that few seldom see, the Northern Flying Squirrel, which I only see between the hours of midnight and 2am generally. I have a posting of them on this sight too.
What a lovely series Willie, we used to have native red squirrels here too but unfortunately the Grey ones pushed them out :(
Thanks Yuko, your quite welcome for the beautiful photos. As you well know my attempt with my wildlife photography is more then to just document the creatures I see. I have another goal which to me is far greater, to get people to have a greater appreciation for the creators found all around them. Always trying to make the "ordinary look extraordinary".
I love this cute little guy! Eating too big of a piece a little too fast? :-) Your work and comments are inspiring! Thank you for all your beautiful photos.
Thanks Jemma, I am flattered that you think so highly of my work. Watching wildlife, and making beautiful captures of the wildlife I see, is only a hobby of mine. But it is something I am very very very passionate about. I have many postings of this caliber, and will be posting more in the future.
You are welcome willie !! its mine pleasure to watch such a wonderful series that ultimate produce sensations in my mind and fingers to express the great feelings by comments after watching your all awesome spottings !!
You are amazing! The owl series is great. The Great Gray is so expressive. Sometimes it's eyes look like it is a bit bashful.
Thanks Glen, and Kranti, I am thrilled you like this series, and I am honored you took the time to comment.
