Field Notes

Description:

The Epione Underwing Moth is a member of the Noctuidae family. Hindwings sooty black with sharp white fringes. On forewings, the outer (reniform) spot is smudged and inconspicuous, the inner (subreniform) spot elongated and teardrop-shaped with the sharp end pointed posteriorly. The wingspan is 55-65 mm. There is probably one generation per year. Hodges 8773.

Habitat:

It is found from Quebec and Ontario south through Connecticut to Florida and west to Texas and Oklahoma. Typically flies June through September. This one was photographed in Edgefield County, SC.

Notes:

Adults can be attracted to bait. Larvae feed on hickory foliage, esp. Shagbark. Epione was a mythological Greek healer, wife of Aesclepius, mother of Hygeia, Panacea, Machaon and several others.
