Field Notes

Description:

These ones were bigger than the owl eyes that we saw in Guyana and are a subspecies that is only in Trinidad, Suriname and Venezuela. The wingspan was around 15cm (5.5in) and they definitely fitted their name of Giant owl butterfly. I didnt see one flying at all though only ever still on a tree branch.

Habitat:

Seen at Asa Wright's nature centre in Trinidad. it is a subspecies of the Illieoneus Giant owl seen across central and South America.
