Description:

This bird kept pecking at the wood on the branch of the tree. Peck, peck, peck... It was about 20-30 cm high.

Hi Liam, thanks a lot for your suggestion, after looking at the picture on the link it seems like a Laced Woodpecker to me.
Far from sure. My suggestion is more conjecture than anything, but Laced Woodpecker seems to be a fairly good fit.
