Description:

Substrate and ecology: growing mainly on acidic and volcanic rocks, rarely on limestone, very rarely on bark, usually in shady situations, in mixed pine-oak-juniper forests or in canyons, between 200 and 2530 m; World distribution: southern North America;

Habitat:

Spotted growing on a rockface on top of Kennesaw Mountain

Some references indicate Usnic acid was/is used to fight TB bacteria; and it is somehow used in contemporary Homepathic medicine. It is used to ferment a corn beverage in Mexico, if that could be considered a medicinal use.
