Field Notes

Description:

Largest of the South American deer species. Standing up to 1.2m (3'9") at the shoulder although large males can be bigger and weighing in between 80 - 125kg (176-276lbs) but again large males can exceed this.. Reddish brown body with long legs and large ears. Lower legs and muzzle are black. Hooves are large and semi webbed. Males have antlers.

Habitat:

They live only in marshy areas. This male seen in the Brazilian Pantanal. Due to habitat loss this species is listed as 'Vulnerable'. They are good swimmers and obviously evolved to their habitat.
