Description:

This is an egg case (ootheca) of the Carolina mantis. The egg case has a layered or ribbed look and is trapezoidal, not spherical, in shape.

Habitat:

Attached to dead wood. Surrounding area is an oak hammock in the middle of an old rice plantation. Photographed along Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge.
