Field Notes

Description:

Female. 6.5 inches long (16.51 cm). Rich orange/brown and white throat and breast. Grayish-blue head and back. Light blue wings and tail. White eye-ring. Color on female varies from deep blue like male to grayish brown. Feeds on seeds and insects.

Habitat:

Open woodlands near house.

Notes:

Population seriously declined in the 1970's, but thanks to bluebird nesting boxes all across the country, this is helping the bluebird population recover. (Loss of nesting cavities and nest competition with House Sparrows and European Starlings.)
