Field Notes

Description:

The bird without doubt is a Seedeater. Several other seedeaters are common in the area, but none has the same white collar combined with the black back, which makes me think it to be a Caqueta Seedeater (Sporophila murallae). Although it also resembles a Variable Seedeater (Sporophila corvina) I believe it to be less likely to ocurr in this area considering its range and habitat preferences. But maybe someone has another suggestion.

Habitat:

It was found alone, in a temporarily flooded vegetation dominated by grasses along the Beni River in the Bolivian Amazon. Although it was found on the border of an area seriously transformed by the extraction of mud for brickmaking, nearby there is still a rather well preserved Varzea forest, recognized internationally as the Important Birding Area "Surroundings of Riberalta".

Notes:

I believe this to be a Caqueta Seedeater (Sporophila murallae), what would make it a new register for Bolivia, and a significant amplification of its range towards the south.
