Smoky Polypore

Resupinate crust fungus. Pore surface is navy blue to gray and is arranged in a waved/overlapping pattern. I didn’t realize the blue side was the fertile surface until I looked at the photos that my macro lens captured. There is a lot of soil and what looks like larval casings on this surface. The "top” surface is cream to blush and is slightly hairy and peeks out from edge of root. The texture of this side feels a lot like cardboard egg crate container material!

Bjerkandera adusta is a fungus in the Meruliaceae family and is considered a plant pathogen (in live trees). It is, however, primarily saprobic. Enzymes found within B. adusta are of great scientific interest as they are capable of bioremediating PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons).
