Description:

Echinodorus cordifolius (L. ) Griseb. (Alismataceae) is an aquatic plant with long thin leaf-stalks and spade-shaped leaf blades. Leaves are emersed, submersed leaves mostly absent; blade with translucent markings distinct lines, ovate to elliptic, base truncate to cordate. Flowers are white, 3-petalled, and grow in distant whorls on a rigid long stem. It is found in marshes, swamps, ditches and ponds. It is native to Mexico, the West Indies, Central America, South America, and southeastern United States.

Habitat:

On a ditch along a dirt-road outside the hot spring resorts area in Pansol Calamba, Laguna.

Notes:

This plant has a long history, first being described in 1753 as a species of Alisma (water plantain) and moved to the genus Echinodorus in 1857. It has long been grown in aquariums for its attractive leaf shape and its robust and hardy nature.
