Trachemys scripta elegans

Field Notes
Description:
This is a male red-eared slider. You can tell by the very long front claws, which he uses to stroke the female during courtship. This guy was found basking in the main wetland at Huntley Meadows Park. Though they are very common in the park, this species is not native to Northern Virginia. They are native from West Virginia to Texas and the across the midwest. The populations in the park were established when people released their unwanted pets. Please do not buy turtles as pets! Many of them can outlive you. The reptile and amphibian pet trade is leading to the decline of some species, introduction of invasive species and spread of diseases in wild populations. Love them where they live or if you must keep one as a pet, then please get one from a reputable rescue organization, not a pet store or private breeder.
