Description:

So by no means are these good pictures, but I saw wild Aplomados in the US! They are an average sized falcon and have a long tail. They are mostly brown in color and have a white bib on the chest and a tan underbelly. There are dark stripes on the face.

Habitat:

They were once extirpated from the US and Mexico, but there have been a few introductions of the past decade that have been remotely successful. They are common south of Mexico and down into northern South America. It inhabits dry grasslands and savannahs, and there is little habitat for them in south Texas, but they seem to be doing pretty well down there.

Notes:

The structure these two birds are sitting on is the container they were released to the area in. They are commonly seen sitting on it or on any of the Yucca plants in the area.

They were released in the early 1990's! They aren't increasing in numbers a whole ton just because there isn't much habitat for them, but there are many breeding pairs every year :)
They are beautiful birds! Do you know how long ago they were released?? I am thrilled at the reintroduction! Great spotting!
