Field Notes

Description:

The Anna’s Humming bird is one of only three humming birds that are permanent residents of the U.S. and is the only hummingbird that winters in northern climates. The Anna’s Hummingbird is also the largest & most common hummingbird found in California and the only one that produces a song. Most other hummingbirds make very little if any sound. –This little one is very vocal anytime it feeds or is chasing off other hummingbirds. These hummingbirds usually have a beautiful red crown but their colors can vary. The females have less color. I think this one is a male.

Habitat:

This little bird is all fluffed up because this picture was taken early on a very cold morning in the far northern California valley.

Notes:

The Anna’s hummingbird is a very territorial hummingbird. The males make elaborate dive displays at other birds and sometimes even at people.
