Field Notes

Description:

Varied in color from white to orange and size of flower from 1' to 2'. The plant itself can be various sizes depending on how it is kept by its owner.

Habitat:

Well-drained, acidic soils. Most do best when protected from intense afternoon sun. Azaleas are not successful in coastal areas where alkaline soils, salt drift, or saline irrigation water are found. They are also not adapted to the warm winters and soil conditions. This plant was observed in a County park on a large plant under a canopy of slash pine w/ one side exposed to the south allowing for the needed sunlight azaleas need.

Notes:

The 17 native species of the US are deciduous.
