Field Notes

Description:

This hermit crab was about 3 inches long. You can see a hand for comparison. It had at least 6 claw-tipped legs and two antennae. It was using a snail shell for protection. When threatened, it would retreat back into its shell and draw its legs up, as in the second picture.
The crab itself was a musty lavender color.

Habitat:

This was found on a sandy seashore near Batam, Indonesia, at about 5 o'clock in the evening.
