Field Notes

Description:

I was admiring their lovely colors and forms when I found some broken ones (last photo) that showed they are actually hollow inside... I was a bit surprised as these are not that thick to begin with. They are a grayish purple color and did not appear to have any branching.

Habitat:

Growing alongside the footpath in a Sitka Spruce forest near some alders, spruce, and high bush cranberry. I often find these in healthier spruce forests here, usually near some water such as streams or marshy spots.
