Field Notes

Description:

Large leaf croton. Leaf is approximately 9 inches long by 6 inches wide. Plant is approximately 3 feet tall.

Habitat:

Tropical coastal plain, adjacent to rain forest.

Notes:

The large and primarily tropical plant family Acanthaceae contains at least 4000 species, placing it among the top 12 or so most diverse families of flowering plants. The group is part of the order Lamiales, which includes familiar plants such as snapdragons (Antirrhinum, Plantaginaceae), mints (Lamiaceae), African violets (Gesneriaceae), and monkeyflowers (Mimulus, Phyrmaceae).

Your ID spurred me on to acquire more information. I found that these beautiful plants are part of the order Lamiales which include some of my favorite plants; snapdragons and African violets.
