Description:

Underground hive of the Eastern yellowjacket, a predatory wasp.

Habitat:

Found throughout the eastern United States and into the Great Plains. Nests are almost exclusively built underground.

Notes:

Looks abandoned. Found while clearing a new trail in the woods behind our house.
