Masked Shrike (male)
Lanius nubicus
25.0593, 51.3255
Field Notes
Description:
A friendly and beautiful member of the true shrike (Lanius) genus. The male masked shrike has primarily black and white plumage aside from orange flanks (just under the wings). The name comes from the broad black stripe running from behind the eyes to the cap.
Habitat:
A short range migrant, breeding in Europe and wintering in Northern Africa. There is also a separate population in Iran. This one is probably en route to Europe, with a short stop-over at an irrigated farm in Qatar where it was spotted.
