Field Notes

Description:

Wingspan male: 21-29 mm Female: 25-31 mm. Deep copper-orange. underside heavily marked, dark. Sexes similar. Females larger, wings rounder. occurs in large numbers in small areas. Both sexes fond of yellow compositae flowers. Fast flight not sustained.

Habitat:

Fynbos. Nominate in W Cape, selected areas in W Cape. Prefers wetlands, gulles and hillsides.

Notes:

Flights period: Several broods: nominate Sept-Apr, peak Dec
