Description:

Known as Poaka in Māori, these beautiful birds can be mistaken for the Black-winged Stilt. According to Beauty of Birds: https://www.beautyofbirds.com/blackwingedstilts.html Pied Stilts have an "[a]ll white head and neck. Black behind. Open black chest band and most have a white band across the upper back."

Habitat:

Cruising around on the sand at Smails Beach, Dunedin.

Notes:

It was a reasonably cool day with cloud cover. Bit of a breeze on arrival which picked up a bit and there was a light sprinkle when leaving the beach.
