Description:
I went into the garage, at 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, looking for some insects to photograph. I saw one acorn, lying on the garage floor. This acorn, was one inch long, and one half of an inch wide. The colors of this acorn, was light brown, medium brown, and dark brown. It's cup-shaped cupule, was missing. The bottom of this acorn, was pointed. The top of this acorn, without its cupule, had a flat top, with a round circle in the center. This acorn, was smooth and shiny. The acorn, or oak nut, is the nut of the oaks and there close relatives ( genera Quercus and Lithocarpus, in the family Fagaceae ). It usually contains a single seed, enclosed in a tough, leathery shell, and borne in a cup-shaped cupule. A lot of animals feed on acorns. ( pigeons, birds, ducks, pigs, deer, squirrels, chipmunks, pigs, mice.... ). Fruit of the oak, is called acorn. Production of acorns, starts at the age of 20 to 50 years.
Habitat:
Most species of oak trees, are deciduous. Oak trees can be found around the world, across a tremendous diversity of terrestrial biomes. There are more than 80 species of oaks in North America. Oaks are spread all over the northern temperate zones. Oaks can be found, in a wide variety of habitat, ranging from sea coasts to high mountains, and the wet lowlands.
