Field Notes

Description:

Small to medium white/yellow butterfly of the Family Pieridae. Creamy white and sometimes yellow with black tips to the forewings. Females have 2 spots on each wing. Males have 1 spot on each wing. Sometimes mistaken for a moth because of its plain color. Wingspan: 32-47 mm (1.25 - 2 inches) One of the most cold hardy non-hibernating butterflies.

Habitat:

My garden on small yellow mums.

Notes:

Range: United States (1860), Europe, Asia, North Africa. Hawaii by 1898 and Australia 1929-1943. Very common butterfly in my area. The first to appear in the spring and one of the last in the late fall. (Fall 2012)
