Field Notes

Description:

Nine-banded armadillos generally weigh from 2.5–6.5 kg (5.5–14 lb), though the largest specimens can scale up to 10 kg (22 lb). They are one of the largest species of armadillo. The outer shell is composed of ossified dermal scutes covered by nonoverlapping, keratinized epidermal scales, which are connected by flexible bands of skin. This armor covers the back, sides, head, tail, and outside surfaces of the legs. The underside of the body and the inner surfaces of the legs have no armored protection. Instead, they are covered by tough skin and a layer of coarse hair.

Habitat:

Riparian forest trail beside Lake Lewisville. Mostly oaks. Small water tributaries to the lake.

Notes:

These two were busy digging themselves a nice comfy hole. They came out to have their photo taken. See the movie.

They can jump stratightbup about 2 feet. Scare a person if you dont know they are there
Haha yeah the one that I saw was foraging in some leaf litter and I had to chase it (really got my exercise). It's so funny to watch them run or at least the one I saw; it was very clumsy and kinda kept stumbling lol
Nice! Not many people on Project Noah have video of what they find! I've only seen one live armadillo my entire life but I didn't manage to get any video.
Thanks Carol and Gerardo :) they are quite curious. I have had babies other years in my garden and they are such fun to watch.
