Field Notes

Description:

They are a shiny black color with a lighter colored belly. This guy was about 3 and a half feet, but it is common for them to get upwards of 8 feet. He had several ticks behind his left eye and further back on his body, and his left eye looks to have had some problems with shedding its eye scale in the past since it is milky blue.

Habitat:

They are found in southern Texas and northern Mexico. They live in lightly vegetated areas near permanent water and live in dens made by other animals. We caught this guy basking on the road in the morning. We took some pictures of him and let him go :)

Thanks Antonio and Carol :) Actually Carol, one of my favorite snakes is the mountain patchnose. They are overall quite plain, but I love their little nose and the ones I have encountered have all been such sweethearts!
WOW! Cool! Very dark. I think I would be afraid. But probably the venomous ones are "pretty" with their markings.
