Field Notes

Description:

The male is much more colourful.
It has golden-orange to deep-red crown and neck feathers. Dark metallic-green tail with a white bunch of feathers at the base. The underparts are a dull blackish colour. Upperparts are a riot of colours: blue-green, dark red, maroony-red, orange, rufous and blackish brown.
This bird is the progenitor of all the fowls that land on our dinner plates.

Habitat:

Forest floor where the family was foraging. In a trice, the female went deeper into the underbush.

Notes:

Surprisingly alert bird. And we were restricted to what we could spot from the jeep.Dismounting in tiger territory would have been silly!
