Field Notes
Description:
One of the largest woodpeckers in North America, Dryocopus pileatus, the Pileated Woodpecker is characterized by its large size and bright red crest. The males have a "mustache" near the "cheek." This guy was pecking at the tree on the other side of the road. I think he lives in our Norway Spruce forest.
Habitat:
Coniferous forest, seemingly prefers to peck on deciduous trees.
