Field Notes

Description:

The Castanet-like seed pods open high in the tree and release a single seed with an enormous tissue paper like phalange which allows it to flutter long distances in the wind. The day we were there was very windy and the seeds were fluttering about in the forest like butterflies.

Habitat:

Sumidero Canyon National Park, Grijalva River, Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas, Mexico.

Thank you Jemma, I wanted to add this to that mission but it has been discontinued. Too bad, because it was a really nice mission. :(

you could have added it to my Seed pod mission,if it were active. http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8362643check it out, regardless. it has some neat spots.
Thank you Sckel, it is a wondrous thing! Wish I had saved one in a book! :) I have a book called "Born on the Wind" about insects and I would have put it there.
You discovered something about it? I would hold it in a book. This is one of the most beautiful ways of seed dispersal. Many plant had the same idea.
