Field Notes

Description:

Costus woodsonii Maas (Costaceae) is an easy growing perennial herb that is a prolific bloomer year-round in warmer regions growing up to 12 ft. / 3.7 m tall. It is named Red Button Ginger because of its lovely flower head that comes forth as a luscious red button; the yellow flowers that emerge from the red cones are edible. The leaves are glossy, dark green, hairless, spirally arranged, drooping, and elliptic to egg-shaped. The cane-like stems emerge from underground rhizomes and are erect to leaning.

Habitat:

Found in a hot spring resort area in Calamba, Laguna.

Distribution: Native to Central and South America. It has been introduced, cultivated and made locally naturalized ornamental garden plant in other tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
