Field Notes

Description:

I took this picture at the beach a couple of years ago. A helpful commenter has identified it for me as a Kelp Gull, also called a Southern Black-Backed Gull or in Maori, The Karoro.

The Gull pictured is a juvenile, which is why it is brown instead of the distinctive black and white.

Habitat:

Gulls usually gather on rubbish tips, as they scavenge for small prey.
