Field Notes

Description:

This plant is approximately 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide. The leaves on this plant are dark green and feathery. There are clumps of small light blue flowers. The flowers have a sweet smell. My research showed that this plant only blooms in the spring and in the fall the color of the leaves will turn to gold.

Habitat:

This plant was found growing in a sunny place at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Notes:

My plant is good to attract pollinators because it smells sweet and has flowers. The evidence from my research is that bees, flies and hummingbirds often pollinate this type of plant.

That's a beautiful plant! You mentioned that it smells sweet and that bees and flies pollinate it. Based on this information, what time of day do you think it smells the strongest? What do you think would happen if it smelled musty or spicy instead of sweet? Or had no smell at all?
I agree with Leo, it's cool that the plant blooms for a shorter period of time, but continues living through the summer! I am going to watch how my flowering plants change week-to-week.
