Field Notes

Description:

we found a plant that had purple flowers when we were hiking.

Habitat:

Ohio- John Bryan State Park

Notes:

We could only observe one day, but we saw about 20 honey bees, 2-3 bumble bees, 1 sweat bee (pictured here, we think), and 1 ant on a patch of these flowers, so we think they are good for pollinators, but we don't know what they are.

Species ID Suggestions

Great Waterleaf

Hydrophyllum appendiculatum

Comments (3)

There are many flowers in that Subfamily Hydrophylloideae native to this region. If you get a chance to hike this weekend, keep an eye out for similar looking flowers and investigate whether they are good plants for pollinators too!
Good spotting ! Nice to see and be informed about wild flora from the other side of the planet. Thanks.
Great find! What did you notice that these insects were doing that makes you think they are good pollinators?
